TITLE:                      ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:                                   

• Eligible for certification as an Intermediate Administrator or Supervisor (092 endorsement) in Connecticut
• Advanced degree preferred, preferably advanced training in curriculum and educational administration
• Minimum of six years of experience as a school administrator, preferably as a director of district-wide programs or member of the central administrative staff with direct staff supervision and program evaluation responsibilities
• Such additions and alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable

JOB GOALS:           

• To assist the Superintendent in articulating, developing, executing, and monitoring plans for the realization of the district’s Vision of a Learner and overall vision and mission for the Wilton Public Schools. To provide overall leadership in articulating and coordinating the curriculum and instructional program K-12.
• To work collaboratively with the Director of Digital Learning to integrate technology and digital resources into the instructional program.
• To provide leadership in implementing and evaluating the district assessment programs and professional learning activities.

 PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

 General

• In consultation with the Superintendent and Principals establishes annual action goals for the position on a clearly-defined priority basis, prepares strategies for achieving those goals and agrees upon criteria for evaluating the accomplishment of the established goals.
• Establishes format and supervises maintenance of all records within the area of responsibilities.
• Responsible for job definition, promotion, evaluation, hiring and termination recommendations for all employees supervised.
• Attends Board meetings and prepares such reports as the Superintendent may request.
• Assumes responsibility in absence of the Superintendent.
• Is knowledgeable about government statutes, regulations and rules relating to curriculum, and advises interested parties of the provisions of the law.
• Assumes budget analysis and oversight responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.
• Develops such administrative rules and procedures as may be necessary to implement Board policies, and reviews such rules and procedures with the Board in the areas of responsibility.
• Coordinates the preparation and submission of all state and federal reports in the area of responsibility, reviewing all reports to verify accuracy before recommending approval and signature by the Superintendent.
• Chairs and coordinates work of district committees as directed by the Superintendent.
• Accepts additional assignments in the area of curriculum as directed by the Superintendent.

Curriculum, Assessment & Instruction

• Supervises, coordinates, articulates and evaluates the implementation of K-12 curriculum in collaboration with the certified staff under the general direction of the Superintendent.
• Directs the development of new programs in curriculum, instruction, and program assessment with the certified staff under the general direction of the Superintendent.
• Directs the preparation, editing, distribution and maintenance of curriculum guides.
• Presents curriculum reports to the Board of Education as directed by the Superintendent.
• Collaborates with the Director of Digital Learning to articulate and evaluate the integration of technology into the curricular program.
• Directs and supervises the district’s standardized group testing program, including the responsibility for scheduling, interpreting and reporting the results to the staff, administration, Board and other appropriate parties.
• Collaborates with the Assistant Superintendent for Special Services to develop, implement and oversee effectiveness of continuum of supports, inclusive of intervention and MTSS.

Professional Learning

• Supervises and evaluates selected non-tenure teachers in cooperation with Principals.
• Supervises district instructional leadership positions in collaboration with Principals.
• Implements the district-wide professional learning program in collaboration with certified staff and consistent with Board policy on Staff Development.
• Reviews staff requests to attend conferences in collaboration with Principals and Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and General Administration.
• Supervises the implementation of the mini-sabbatical leave program.
• Maintains a clearinghouse of information on professional development opportunities, making such information available to all staff members on a regular basis.
• In consultation with the Superintendent pursues grant opportunities within area of responsibilities.
• Studies all Federal and State legislation, projects, and programs for the possibilities and opportunities they offer for educational grants, entitlements, and allocations offered relevant to the needs of the district.
• Assists the Superintendent and professional staff in planning the wise utilization of funds available to the schools through the various Federal and State programs.
• Coordinates the writing of all project proposals for, or related to curriculum, assessment, instruction and professional learning to be submitted to the State Department of Education or other designated agencies for approval in the manner required under the law.
• Evaluates projects proposed by members of the staff for, or related to curriculum, assessment, instruction and professional learning for their relevance to the district’s plans and needs, and their eligibility for Federal funding.

 Administration / Community

• Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for curriculum, instruction and assessment & professional learning.

  

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:       261 day position. Salary to be set annually by the Board on recommendation of the Superintendent.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:    Normal office physical demands; ability to be present throughout the school buildings; ability to travel to all school sites throughout the district as needed.

 

EVALUATION:                         Performance of this job to be evaluated by Superintendent on action goals established and the criteria for evaluating the accomplishments of the established goals.
